Choosing Life (Part 2)

Choosing Life (Part 2)

|
March 8, 2015

At our 1999 Summer Seminar David Kelley offered this inspiration analysis of the longstanding Objectivist theoretical debate over whether one should choose to live because life is a value, or whether life is a value because one chooses to live. Dr. Kelley lucidly unravels this philosophical puzzle and goes on to examine what this abstract issue means concretely in our actual lives as individuals. Dr. Kelley explores the importance to us of finding meaning in life and the dire consequences of losing it.

We find meaning, he argues, through the primary purposes that shape our lives, and through achievement and experience, as elements of purpose. Turning in his final section to the issue of commitment, Dr. Kelley shows how our purposes can be tyrannical masters unless chose them, and finds the experience of choice in our day by day renewal of our commitments to our most personal values.
